And you should know FPV video transmitters are not your 2.4Ghz RC transmitter. They can’t frequency hop. You need to set the video transmitter to a channel and make sure the video receiver are in the same channel. If anyone else if flying FPV you have to make sure you aren't on their channel!


A good antennas is very important


Your FPV system is only as good as your antennas. Most start using what comes with most video transmittersand receivers.a simple omni directional linear polarized whip antenna set which, depending on your frequency, can give very poor performance.

Practice&fly safely


When flying a FPV drone, the pilot sees from the aircraft's perspective, and even not need to look at the FPV drone. So the FPV aircraft can fly well beyond visual range, it’s only limited by the range of the remote control and video transmitter.

Where is it safe to fly FPV? I would hope that most people would agree it’s dangerous that flying over largely populated areas, busy highways, and other areas of high population density,especially for beginners,you should choose a sparsely populated areas.Parking garages and forests are also perfect venue?for drone racing enthusiasts.So first make sure you get a proper FPV and good place to fly,then take someone with you who’s experieced with FPV racing.Do not attempt to fly 2 miles away from yourself, with headtracking, in high winds, near sunset, on your very first FPV flight! The differences between Smart Battery And Ordinary Battery

The DJI new-released M600 brings big breakthrough to the all UAV Area. Not only the A3’s self-adaptive flight systems and new RONIN-MX is , but also the pretty long flight time supported by six smart batteries.
It introduces that a customized battery management system and power distribution board allows all six batteries to be turned on with one button press, and keeps the system in flight in the event of a failure of a single battery, and allows users to check the battery status in real-time during flight.
As we all know, M100 has adopted smart batteries to support the big heavy device for more professional aerial photography and longer time and distance using. Then what are the differences between Smart Battery and Ordinary Battery, why they are more and more widely used in the electronic ndustry?


1. Definition


A smart battery/A smart battery system(SBS) is a rechargeable battery pack equipped with a built-in battery management system. The smart battery can internally measure voltage and current, and deduce charge level and SoH (State of Health) parameters, indicating the state of the cells, calculated and predicted information to its SMBus Host under software control.
A basic SBS including 3parts:System Host,Smart Charger and Smart Battery.

1.1 Advantages


Ordinary Battery


Ordinary Batteries are illusive and do not exhibit visible changes as part of usage from both the user's and the equipment's perspective. It looks the same when fully charged or empty, new or old and in need of replacement. A very big defect is that they represent an unpredictable source of power.

Firstly, a user has little knowledge that their battery is about to run out or how much operating time is left.

Secondly, equipment powered by the battery cannot determine if the battery, in its present state, is capable of supplying adequate power for an additional load (such as spinning up a hard disk) or not.

In the world of RC hobbyists, they might want to find every possible way to change and get their models more powerful or longer running time. However, this article aims at knowing the differences, advantages and disadvantages between the standard lipo batteries and LiHV batteries mainly on RC field(rc car batteries lipo).

Differences:


LiHV batteries are more than just having higher end volt comparing to standard lipo batteries. There are less possibility of a puffing liHV. Besides, LiHV batteries have the same performance as standard lipos when they are charged to 4.2V, but higher capacity when they are charged higher than 4.25V. Further more, they do not have the same internal resistance. LiHV has a lower internal resistance compared with the standard one.

Pros of using a LiHV battery


Obviously, the higher end voltage may give your RC models more power, and the research done by others shows that the capacity of the LiHV battery are also increased, so there are more capacity available for longer runtime. LiHV batteries are lighter than the standard batteries. Further more, the lower internal resistance of the LiHV battery would make more power through the entire discharge. From the discharge gragh, we can see that the whole curve of the LiHV is relatively higher than the standards.

Cons of using a LiHV battery


The requisition of LiHV battery to gain the additional available capacity is relatively more complex. When you are charging these two kinds of batteries with your charger, you have to charge them to 4.2V, then take the “standards” out, set HV to the charger, then initiate another charge cycle to bring the HV packs to full charge. This extra hassle may prove to be more trouble than it’s worth to gain a few extra seconds with each drive/flight. Besides, you may need to buy a new charger for the LiHV. So I would prefer to buy a higher capacity battery instead of charging it. Exceeding 4.2v/cell limit as damage could be done to your receivers, servos or transmitters. From the discharge graph, the stability of the standard lipo is better than the LiHV battery.
In conclusion, although LiHV batteries are relatively better compared with standard lipo in many ways. But for now, I would use lipo batteries and choose higher capacity batteries instead. But What will the future of the batteries be like? Let’s look into the future of the batteries.

Choose Helicopter,Airplane or Multirotor ?

Multirotors are very popular these years after DJI economic and recreational multirotors’ coming.And they attract many newbies to the RC Hobby and UAV areas.But many new beginners express that they are confused to choose heli,airplane or multirotor as a beginner.About how to work,we have posted in the last article(http://rclipobatteries.blogspot.com/2016/04/take-you-to-insight-into-uav-terms.html),and they are still quite different in many aspects,now we will compare them in some important ones.

In Operability:

In terms of the operability,multirotors are the simplest cause their rotors can change the thrust and torque produced by each.They can fly with no need of runway,and hover after taking off.So it can help to observe one object for a long time by hovering in the air.
However,the airplane’s(Fixed-wing aircraft’s) landing and taking-off needs more open field.
And the helicopter can VTOL in congested or isolated areas,but its drive device controller design is difficult,and the controller adjustment is also very difficult.


In Reliability:


When it comes the mechanical reliability,multirotors don’t have movable parts,it basically depends on the reliability of the reliability of the brushless motor, so the reliability is higher.In comparison, the airplanes and helicopters have mechanical connection parts,they will wearing out in flying and lead to a decline in reliability.And multirotosr can hover,which means that the flight range can be controlled easily,so they are safer than airplanes.

In Stability:


Helicopter’s stability is weakest.Many of the simplest helicopters don’t require advanced systems to be pretty stable.
Airplane’s stability is better than helicopter,but its speed is fastest.
Multirotor’s stability is strongest.A multirotor has 3,4,6 or 8 different motors in its shape.You can control the rotor blades to perform all sorts of aerobatics and tricks.In most cases,multirotors are more stable than helicopters and airplanes.The stability means that the machine is able to perform and keep performing an instruction commanded by the remote control until other instruction is transmitted.
The higher the stability the easier to fly.

In Application:

If you intend to transport something,such as a camera or another mid-weight object,then a multirotor is for you,not just because of the above advantages but also because they have a bigger body.Many amazing videos online about high buildings,wonderful landscapes,and crazy aerobatics were filmed using one of these.And multirotors can be using in more areas like investigation,plant protection,monitor the?situation, rescure in emergency and so on.
A helicopter may get balanced to one side and that would affect the center of gravity, altering the entire functionality of the device.But its flexibility is best cause the small body and responds quicker than the others because there is only one or two motors that need to be adjusted when sending a command.It is more common to see RC helis doing all sorts of maneuvers and tricks.A very exciting vedio shows RC helicopter mops the floor and wall use its rotor blades.

If you want to choose one machine who has fast speed,fly in long distance and longer time,then an airplane is better for you.But because it is hard to controll and work,it is not common used yet.


In Your Expertise Level:


If you have very little or no experience with RC flying devices,you can choose RC helicopter to begin your hobby because RC heli works with easier channels when compare to the other two.Multirotors have more complicated channels and function you need to control.And Airplane is the hardest one and not very common nowaday!Definitely,it’s more fun and you will get great flight experience when flying multirotors.

In the Budget:


In the past a multirotor is much more expensive than a RC helicopter,certainly,airplane is most ecpensive.But with the time this has changed and now you can get a great quality multirotor in a pretty reasonble and affordable price for many.However,you need to think of spare parts when choosing one of these machines.Please don’t care about the price merely when purchasing the first device.Do be care about the spareparts and check the important parts price like motors,battery,rotor blades and so on to make sure you can get them easily when needed to change.In general,the budget spent in a multirotor will be higher than a RC heli because of the big body.The most normal budget is that multirotor will need bigger capacity battery than RC heli.So you need to choose a reliable brand to use.I prefer Gens Ace 2s lipo and Tattu rc car batteries lipo battery whose quality is excellent in a good price.

To understand a Multirotor

Frame is the core of a multirotor, almost all the accessories connected to it directly. We can put the whole model aircraft into two parts: a "heart" - flight control and the use of motor control "legs" - machine blade, and above all these parts are to be integrated in the frame, in order to avoid damage by hitting them, and a rack and control center of gravity of the whole plane.

So what the material usually use to build a frame?


Frame can be made up of many different materials, such as wood, plastic, metal (aluminum), glass fiber, carbon fiber, and other materials. All the parts will be fixed with screws or cable tie on the rack, and occasionally see a flexible foam padding on the rack with plastic or similar in order to reduce the impact of external factors on the frame buffer.

How to define a multirotor?


There are two mainly aspects, the definition of the element is the number of the motor, it defines the number of rotor how much N; 2 it is rack wing (axis) M, the number of that defines the aircraft is M shaft aircraft. We usually of a spacecraft called M axis N propeller aircraft.

Tricopter(3-motor)


Tricopter generally has two axis in the plane forward, a shaft in the negative. So the body should looks like T or Y type. Negative motor adjust plane through the rotation of the fixed on a course , tricopter is better control, usually also rise faster, but not dramatically. Of course, if the motor stops operation, so the plane will crash, but this kind of model is relatively agile.

Quadcopter(4-motor)


Quadcopter weight more than a tricopter, were also more likely to form, because the quadcopter does not need to separate to control the parameters of single motor. They are more stable, and the flying time is longer, because you can carry a bigger Lipo battery 5000mah. quadcopter by reducing the speed of the two motor to implement the roll, and the other two motor can control the whole of the aircraft.

QuadcopterX(QuadX) or quadcopter+ (Quad +) has different wingspan, makes the plane looks like an X or a +.

Hexcopter and Octocopter(6-moter and 8-moter)


The basic design of hexcopter and octocopter are same. Rotor arranged around a central point into a round shape. There are some model install the rotor at the top. Y type hexcopter looks like a tricopter, but no one in which the parameters of the rotor independent control. On the contrary, yaw is similar to the four rotor aircraft, by changing the speed of the motor. Compared with the independent design yaw rotor, such design feeling not sensitive compared with independent yaw.

More rotor enables the vehicle to load better and more stable. Under the control of the rotor more aircraft in flight controllers, when one or more of the motor power, still can keep the ability to fly without crashing. But of course the total weight of aircraft and its complexity of building and is proportional to the price, and the number of rotor also need a lot of power supply,also need more 5000mah Lipo-batteries to carry.

As a beginner, quadcopter seems to be one of the best introduction to the model. They are easy to set up, and the flight is very stable. But when you start, it is better to ensure that the following two points: as simple as possible, the lighter weight, the better.

The best thing is not to start from a finished product craft. Firstly because when you crashed some expensive equipment, you have to wait and spent a lot of money go to the factory repair. Secondly, finished aircraft heavier commonly, lightness of equipment is easier to control when flying in the air. Thirdly, when flight control automatically upgrade and programmed by manufacturer, after it has already prepared everything for you, and you will never feel yourself the fun of how rotor aircraft flight control. How should beginners begin FPV racing: DIY or buy a FPV Sets?

FPV drone racing has become a very popular activity recently worldwide.There are many asks about how and where to start FPV drone racing. Here I will write a article on how to start drone racing especially for beginners.
Basically there are two ways you can start FPV drone racing.

1.DIY:Build drones using parts you get at RC shops .
2.Buy a FPV Sets.

1)DIY:


One of fun parts of DIY FPV drones is that you can choose parts of your taste. Here I’ll try to build a FPV Quadcopter for example.

Step 2: What you need?


1.4 motors

Step 3: Frame


Begin by roughly build you frame and attaching motors to the arms of the FPV Frame.

How to choose the best Lipo battery for FPV

Does Larger battery allows for longer flight time?
Unfortunately the increase of flight time isn’t proportional to the increase of battery size.As the battery gets larger, the increase in flight time becomes ineffective. Eventually it will reach a point where it just doesn’t gain any more flight time with bigger battery (even lose flight time). This is mainly caused by the weight of the battery. Also note that the heavier your copter gets, the less agile it will be.
There are techniques you can use to help with selecting FPV battery – creating graphs and mathematical model in Excel,
which I found really useful when comparing various products of the same kind. I recently bought some 4S batteries for my FPV quad , like Turnigy Nano 4s batteries and Tattu 4s batteries
I will use these as an example. This technique should be useable for any multicopters, including the 250 mini FPV quad.

List All Batteries and Create Graphs

First, list all the batteries with different capacities, brands of the same cell number. You can include their weight, price, etc in your table. For example I was looking for 4S lipo battery for my FPV and here is the table I created.

From these data, you can create some very interesting and useful graphs, for example I usually do
Density, which is capacity per gram (= capacity / weight)
Value, which is capacity per dollar (= capacity / price)


From the above graphs, if I am only going for best performance and not worry about the price, I would definitely go for 2650mah, 3000mah, or 3300mah FPV batteries.
These graphs tell you some insights into which battery has the highest price/performance ratio, but it doesn’t tell you whether this is the best battery for your RC aircraft, quadcopter or tricopter. To do that, we need to create a mathematical model.

Build Mathematical Model to Estimate Flight Time

By using this model, you will be able to calculate the flight time of any battery. Of course, this is just an estimation, but it will give you an rough idea what battery to go for, and save you from spending too much money and time to try each type.First of all, you need to get one battery first, and collect data using it. Basically the data we need is flight times under different loads. You can collect some other data as well to help you identify what is the max load your FPV can take, for example, the throttle value, current etc.
For example, I used a 3s 2200mah lipo battery, and tested the flight times under different load weight (0g, 110g, 220g, 340g, 405g, 515g – all these weights are physical items I can find in the house that’s why the uneven numbers). This as below is the data I collected from 6 test flights.


I always land the FPV when the voltage alarm beeps, which is when the voltage reaches 3.5V per cell. The column “Actual Capacity Used” is not really needed, but I collect it just to make sure my data is valid. I got that from my charger, when I charge it fully at 4.2V per cell, I know what capacity was used in the previous flight.?I then work out “mah / second”, which is the speed of power consumption, and we can draw a graph from this.



So here is the model. “Cap at 3.5V (86%)” is the effective capacity that can be used during a flight.?I am making an assumption that the voltage drops down to 3.5V when 86% of battery capacity is used. “mah/s” is calculated from the above equation, we can work out the mah/s for each FPV battery, depends on their weight.


And now the estimated flight time is roughly equals to effective capacity divide by mah/s. For example for the 6000mah battery, the effective capacity is 5160mah, and the speed of power consumption is 5.75mah/s, so the flight time would be 898.16 second which is nearly 15 mins.



That’s the analysis I always do when buying FPV batteries. There are a lot of assumptions above, so also do your research on the flight time, ask people for their experience, to verify your theory.

Always check the limits of your speed control before installing a “hotter” motor. Many of you want to increase your RC models/Drones speed or playing time ,and find a way to increase the voltage or capacity.Exactly,through connecting several cells in series,battery packs achieve the desired operating voltage.Each cell adds its voltage to the total terminal voltage.Parallel connection attains higher capacity and the same as current handling.Each cell adds to the ampere/hour (Mah) count.

Serial Connection

One battery’s positive connects the next battery’s negative and all connect like this.In this way,the voltage increases,but the capacity unchanged.That is to say, the total voltage is the sum of all series batteries voltage.

Connecting a pair of 1s, 3.7v, 5000Mah LiPo's in series:

This will increase the VOLTAGE x 2,but the capacity will remain the same for a result of 7.4v,5000Mah lipo battery.

Parallel Connection

If higher currents are needed and larger cells are not available or do not fit the design constraint, one or more cells can be connected in parallel. Most battery chemistries allow parallel configurations with little side effect.The voltage of the illustrated pack remains same, but the capacity increses,current handling and runtime increases too.

Connecting a pair of 1s, 3.7v,5000Mah LiPo's in Parallel:

This will increase the Mahx 2 but the voltage will remain the same for a result of 3.7v, 10000mAh.

Parallel is 3.7v,but you have to based on your RC models’/drones’ norminal power.The voltage is unchanged,but the current is big, after you’ve operated your RC models/drones for a long time,the excess current would shorten the lifespan of your 7.4v lipo battery.So it would do more harm.Please don’t parallel too many cells,keep the current under the norminal current,and you need to change the charger.

If you really want to play them for a longer time,and save you a lot of trouble,you can buy one new battery.The most important thing is that you don't have to change the charger because of the increasing capacity.

Either in serial or in parallel connection, the output power of the battery pack is increased. Parallel Connection is to increase using time,while Serial connection is to increase the speed.

A LiPo Battery or more correctly lithium-ion polymer battery(abbreviated variously as LiPo, LIP, Li-poly and others), is a rechargeable battery of lithium-ion technology in a pouch format. It’s widely used in Radio controlled equipment ,Personal electronics,Electric vehicles,etc.

Just as with other kinds of lithium-ion cells, the voltage of a LiPo cell depends on its chemistry and varies from about 2.7-3.0 V (discharged) to about 4.20-4.35 V (fully charged), for cells based on lithium-metal-oxides (such as LiCoO2), and around 1.8-2.0 V (discharged) to 3.6-3.8 V (charged) for those based on lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO4).
The exact voltage ratings should be specified in product data sheets, with the understanding that the cells should be protected by an electronic circuit that won't allow them to overcharge nor over-discharge under use.
For LiPo battery packs with cells connected in series, a specialised charger may monitor the charge on a per-cell basis so that all cells are brought to the same state of charge (SOC).
If you’re not familar with LiPo batteries, or have just purchased a new charger, you maybe don’t know how to safely set up the charge rate for your battery. Though the battery supplier will show you what the maximum “Charge Rate” of the battery is. But this information is different from the “C-Rating” which is usually displayed as a number on the front of the pack (30C, 75C, etc).

If you are unsure of what your 7.4v lipo battery charge rate is , it would be safe to charge the battery pack at a 1C rate. To determine this number, take the mAh rating of your pack and divide it by 1000.
Here as belowing are some expamples:
Example 1: If your battery is 3300mAh your 1C charge rate is 3.3A. (3300/1000=3.3)
Example 2: If your battery is a 7000mAh pack, your 1C charge rate is 7A. (7000/1000=7)
Example 3: If your battery is a 250mAh pack, your 1C rate would be 0.3. (250/1000=0.25 it’s okay to round up)
And if your battery allow for a higher charge rate (Usually the general range is 1C-5C) simply take the numbers you came to calculating your 1C rate and multiply it by that factor. We can use the above 3 examples.
Example 1:
The first example was a 3300mAh battery pack, which gives us a 3.3A charge rate at 1C. And a 2C charge rate form a 6.6A, a 3C charge rate would be 9.9A and a 5C charge rate would be 16.5A.
Example 2:
7000mAh 1C charge rate = 7A
2C charge rate= 14A
3C charge rate= 21A
5C charge rate= 35A
Now you should be confident when you need to decide the “AMP” rate when charging your 2s lipo battery 5000mah. Always double check that your voltage is same with the one listed on your battery label.
