Why Refer High Voltage Batteries?

Drones are being used more and more widely in all our lives, so the batteries that power these devices are increasingly advancing and being pushed to their limits. One of the biggest challenges to these batteries is endurance; more and more users need the power to last longer.

One such example is with an agricultural drone. Let’s say that the drone carries 10kg of pesticide with two ordinary Lithium Polymer (LiPo) batteries that have a capacity of 16000mAh in 6S (22.2V). This drone will only be able to last about ten minutes with these batteries, which farmers generally find to be too short. However, the use of high-voltage batteries with the same capacity and C rating can increase this flight time by 15-25%, which will increase the efficiency and operations.

We will explore why high-voltage batteries can improve flight duration and also look at the advantages of such batteries.

1. Weight
Without an increase in weight, high-voltage batteries provide better performance.  This is key for UAVs since each drone has a specific payload that it cannot go over.

2. Higher Voltage

If we compare ordinary LiPo batteries to that of those with high voltage, we see a subtle change in voltage. Through this little voltage increase, users are able to get increased performance in their products.

Ordinary LiPo Batteries

The nominal voltage for a single LiPo cell is 3.7V. A 6S battery pack has a nominal voltage of 22.2V, and a 12S has 44.4V.
A single LiPo cell that is fully charged has 4.2V while a 6S has 25.2V and a 12S 50.4V.

High-Voltage LiPo Batteries

The nominal voltage of a single high-voltage LiPo cell is 3.8V, a 6S pack has 22.8V, and a 12S has 45.6V.
A single LiPo cell that is fully charged has 4.35V while a 6S has 26.1V and a 12S 52.2V.

3. Better Cycle Life

In the chart above, we can follow the discharge rate of several batteries. The high-voltage 4.4V batteries (shown in green) demonstrate a higher discharge rate and discharge capacity.

The above chart shows that, under the same discharge currents and cycles, the 4.4V (in blue) has a longer cycle life than the other batteries at 4.35V or 4.2V.

4. Increased Efficiency

Similar to the example offered at the beginning, we put two drones together for a simple test.  Both drones carried 15kg of water with two batteries of 25C and 22000mAh in 6S.
The drone with the non-high-voltage batteries (22.2V) lasted 17 minutes and 50 seconds.
The drone with the high-voltage batteries (22.8V) lasted longer for 22 minutes and 10 seconds, lasting 4 minutes longer than the ordinary batteries.

Why do we choose lipo battery for our quadcopters?


Lipo, the full name is lithium polymer, today they are used in many places like in mobile phones, powerbanks and quadcopters. But why are quadcopters using lipo battery? Before answer this question, we should know What does quadcopter need and what’s the lipo battery?
Quadcopter has got more and more popular; quadcopter as a drone are also used in aerial photography and FPV Racing, so most aerial photography pilots hope their quadcopters can fly longer and FPV racers hope their quadcopter can fly fast. But a few years ago, all that was available to Radio Control enthusiasts were gasoline powered helicopters is the availability of LiPo batteries. Quadcopter is an incredibly inefficient device. If you want to fly longer, you need a larger battery, so you will find it is very funny: the heavier a quadcopter is, the more powerful its motors need to be. The more powerful the motors, the bigger batteries you need, the bigger batteries, the heavier – it goes in a circle, getting worse, each time around. the formula just doesn’t work unless you have a battery technology that is light enough.
Prior to LiPo batteries, there was no practical battery technology that could allow you to close the loop on that equation. LiPo (and LiIon) batteries have a very high energy to weight ratio, and also (important) a very high discharge rate.
The technology is such an improvement over all previous technologies (in these parameters) that the entire paradigm has turned. Now the sky is the limit and designers can think outside the box. Things like, how big a motor to lift a man, how big a battery to run it – yup – it’s doable. Quadcopter so you can “”ride on”!   • LED Indicator:  If the Green LED is active, the Charging Safeguard works properly.
                              If the Yellow LED is active, the protection feature is activated.
                              If the Red LED is active, the Charging Safeguard is malfunctioning
                              If the Red Led is blinking, the battery pack is defective and unable to be charged.
HOW TO USE
Connect the main lead and balance connector of the BATTERY to the output of Safeguard. If the Green LED is active, then connect the main lead and balance connector of the CHARGER to the input of the Safeguard. Make sure the connections and indicator LED are correct then begin charging the battery. If there are any abnormalities please stop charging immediately. To resume charging, please troubleshoot all problems and restart the charging procedure.
ATTENTION
You’d better be attention to these when you are using Gens Ace Charging Safeguard.
  • DO NOT reverse connector polarity.
  • DO NOT short any connectors together.
  • DO NOT leave this product unattended while charging. Stop using the Safeguard      if you find anything abnormal.
  • DO NOT charge any battery that is not in the correct voltage range.
  • USE with Lithium polymer batteries ONLY. DO NOT use any other battery                    chemistry with Charging Safeguard.

Lipo battery Discharge Test By Bulb

Lipo battery discharge is a trouble things, sometimes we plane to fly outdoors with our full charge battery, but at this time you have some other reasons had to cancel this plan, you may wait a long time to flight, so a full charge lipo battery is not good for storage, Lipo battery guide said the voltage for a long time storage should be 3.6V~3.9V range per cell, so we need to discharge the battery to reduced the battery’s voltage. And there is a test about used lamp to discharge the battery.
I have bought a used Gens Ace 2600mAh 6S battery on GensTattu, this is my first time to use Gens Ace 6S lipo, but it is a used battery, the new battery need about 50$, I bought it or my Protos 500.

There are two bulbs, put them in series.
First: charge the battery; I used a 12V power to charge my battery, so the max input power is about 180W, max charge current is 7A.
This is the Internal resistance of battery.
It spend about 17mins to finished fast charge.
Because this battery is an used, I spend about 5 mins to charge my battery’s voltage form 3.8v to full, the capacity is about 1560mAh.
This is a 2600mAh battery, according to the relationship between voltage and capacity of the lipo battery, 36% capacity’s voltage is about 3.8V, the real capacity is  2600 * 36% = 936mAh. So in theory, starting from this voltage charge until full charge in about 2600-936 = 1664mAh.
Using 6S battery discharge, the Lamps are very bright.
But after a short time, the lamps get very hot;
The battery’s voltage drops quickly,
After about 20 minutes, the battery voltage drops 3.75V, you can see the b cell 3 and cell 5 still uneven,
Pull the bulb and the voltage back to 3.83V.
Then plug in the bulb for about less than 1 minute, the battery voltage below 3.71V, pull the bulb the voltage back up to 3.8V, then use the charger storage balance feature to finish it.
Through this test, I get two tips:
  1. If the battery is new and the balance is good, the charger’s storage mode should be not used after the discharge has been completed;
  1. In the course of the discharge, the balance plug can be connected to the battery tester, and the alarm voltage of the battery tester is set to 3.7V, so that when the discharge reaches the value, the electric battery tester alarm will be taken!
In general, use the bulb to discharge is cheaper and faster than chargers, and it will not cause any loss. If you don’t want to cost to much, this way is as good as a cheap and practical solution, it is worth a try.

Materials for quadcopter frame
Most available materials for the frame are:
  • Carbon Fiber
  • Aluminium
  • Wood, such as Plywood or MDF (Medium-density fibreboard)
  • Plastic & PVC
  • Fiberglass
Carbon Fiber , One of the most common materials for multi-rotor frames is carbon fiber.It is lightweight but expensive. A great many of its physical properties are perfectly suited to the hobby. The only catch is that carbon fiber is known to block radio signals, which is obviously not ideal for a hobby that depends on multiple transmissions. That means you have to exercise a bit of care in how you place antennas on your craft. It can be used though, and is often. Just be aware that blocked signals are a possibility.
Wood , Build a frame with wood, It’s fast, low cost and does not require much effort. while not nearly as sexy as carbon fiber or fiberglass, is a very good material for this sort of thing. It’s cheap, RF transparent, takes brief structural overloads well, uses simple adhesives and dampens vibrations wonderfully.
Aluminium is widely used for frame, you need to buy parts and have some tools to cut or connect them together. Very lightweight and aluminum can transmit vibration quite well. Aluminum is easy to fabricate and can often be bent back into shape after crashes.
Plastic & PVC , Frame usually be 3D printed with plastic, This material is lightweight, cheap, and perhaps a bit to ugly for your new quadcopter frame as well as PVC.
Fiberglass , Another material you could consider is thin G-10 fiberglass sheet which is easily machinable. This is nice for the body area as it’s RF transparent. It also makes nice motor mounts.
Some tips for choosing quadcopter frame
Some quadcoper frame can be fine-tuned to suit your exact requirements. such as HobbyKing Switch FPV Quadcopter which By allowing you to choose between 380 and 320 mm wheelbase.
In our case we want to build quadcopter so make sure the angle between two arms is 90 degree and also check that arms are not twisted.
If your frame is too big compare to your power setup (motor-prop, esc , battery) it will add extra weight while if it’s too small props will fight with each other.

How to choose a Lipo battery for your Armattan Japalura
