What Is Tiny Whoop?

Tiny Whoop is a small FPV micro brushed quadcopter, its propellers are protected by EDF ducts that also makes it a very efficient little machine, we can fly FPV around people and kids safely. It allows some insane indoor FPV flying: chasing people, annoying your pets, cruise around the house without hurting anyone or damage anything. Compared to mini quads, the tiny size opens the horizon for new possibilities in FPV hobby. It’s more fun than I’ve ever had.

What are their advantages?

• Tiny size, making them ideal for flying indoors, through shelves, under desks, wherever.
• They are Efficient, with up to 4 minutes of flight from a tiny battery.
• Acrobatic Performance, capable of flips, rolls and fast climbs due to their power to weight.
• Robust, their ducted design also allows them to shrug off most wall impacts.
• Inexpensive to purchase and repair. Even the bigger-budget bundles represent great value.
• Many on the market are ready to fly, and such accessibility is rare when it comes to FPV.
• They are just awesome fun, seriously even if you just want to fly and not tinker.

What do we need know when we build a Tiny whoop?

You can choose to go full-blown with 2S motors and batteries, or even opt for brushless motors (more on this another time!).

A typical build will contain the following parts:

• A frame (80-100mm should be good)
• A flight controller (the SPRacing F3 Brushed is a great choice)
• Motors (8.5mm brushed) & propellers
• Battery (400-750mAh; 1S/2S)
• Receiver (depends on what transmitter you have)
• AIO (all-in-one) camera (the FX798T is a proven champ)

Batteries

Tiny Whoop use 1S 150-205mah LiPo batteries and flight time is about 1-2 minutes. Between different brands and discharge rates there might be a difference in flight time. It’s best to get loads of them. I think 10 to 15 of them is a good number to for a living room FPV racing session.

Motors

There are two types of upgrade 0615 motors sold by micro-motor-warehouse: medium & fast. Type of upgrade motors has an impact on performance and battery life. Because stock PIDs on the Inductrix main board are not adjusted to fly with neither medium nor fast so when flying in acro mode motors sound like they struggle and also there are some oscillations. I didn’t have a chance to test the stock motors with FPV gear on so can’t confirm how they perform in acro.

FPV Lipo Review: Tattu 1300mAh 4s 95c Lipo battery

Now most drones are all using Lipo battery, without the Li-Po technology drones could have not evolve this fast. Biggest advantage of lithium polymer (LiPo) batteries is that they have about four times the energy density of the nickel cadmium or nickel-metal hybrid batteries.

Tattu R-line 95C, 4S Li-Po battery review

Disclosure: I received this battery as part of a product review collaboration with Gens Tattu. Although the batteries were offered for free, all opinions in this article remain my own and I was in no way influenced by the partner.

Although I requested only one R-line 95C 4s Li-Po, I received 3 pieces. Nice surprise, thanks again. Batteries were well packed in a huge box. Each battery comes with its own safety instructions and charging plug protector.

Battery measures around 36 x 72 x 32 mm (W, L , H) and weights 163 grams. Due to thick discharge cable and aluminium envelope, the Tattu R-Line weights about 10 grams more than other 4s Li-Po batteries with same capacity. As you can see in the image bellow it has similar size and form factor with the Walkera F210’s stock battery (1300mAh 4S lipo).

Charging wires are 22AWG, which according to Wikipedia can handle up to 7 Amps. Note: Tattu allows to charger their R-Line 4s 1300mAh battery with max 5C, 5 x 1.3 = 6.5 Amps.

I received all the batteries about half charged (47%). I measured 15.34V on the XT60 plug. Cell 1 – 3.84V, Cell 2 – 3.84V, Cell 3 – 3.82V and Cell 4 – 3.84V. BTW, 3.8 V/cell is the voltage recommended for storing Li-Po batteries.

Tattu R-line 4s 1300 mAh review: Test

Being a responsible guy (and also afraid of explosions), before any test I read the instruction guide. I know that Li-Po batteries require special handling but it was shocking to read that I need to use a fireproof cement concrete bunker to store the battery : -S.

After I discharged the Tattu R-line 4s 1300 mAh to about 10% I started to charge it with 0.7A using my SkyRC iMAX B6 Mini charger. The charging process stopped after about 2 hours, when battery level reached 16.81V (4.2V / cell). The Li-Po battery did not heat up at all and the stored capacity was of 1258 mAh. Second day I went out with my Eachine Racer 250 Pro and  Walkera F210 racing drone in order to do some punch tests.

The Tattu R-Line 4s 1300mAh battery performed very well, punch-outs are even more impressive than with stock battery. I could say that also flight time was better, but this could be hardly determined because every flight is different. Full throttle drains the LiPo battery much faster than just hovering.

Trying few flips I had some crashes too. Battery remained intact and safe for further use.

Summary

As I didn’t have fancy gears to measure the exact spec of the battery, I can’t confirm that the R-Line truly delivers 95C but, in my opinion, if it has only 75C is still far enough for most of the racing drones.

I liked that the battery was carefully packed and it came with detailed safety instruction (En, DE and CH).

Because lately ordering Li-Po batteries from China became more and more difficult, is good to know that now you can order it directly from Gens Ace Europe or US warehouse.

 Performance

It has never been so easy to escape thanks to the Parrot Flypad which lets you fly your Parrot Mambo over a distance of up to 100 m. Fly not only farther, but also longer with the new high-performance Power Battery lasting up to 10 minutes. There are 3-axis gyroscope and accelerometers inside with a downward-facing ultrasound sensor all working to make for generally stable flight. The Mambo comes with blade protectors that are easy to pop on and off and when you first start flying it around they’re an essential addition.

Cannon

Interact with other drones and pilots using the included Cannon accessory. Attach the Cannon to your Parrot Mambo and let the games begin! Test your skills with target practice, and fire these little balls at a pyramid of cups or other light-weight targets. You can load up to 6 pellets into the Cannon at a time. The first pilot to knock everything down wins! This feature is very similar to Xiaomi mi drone 4K.

Grabber

Attach the Grabber to the Parrot Mambo and use it to transport mini-objects that weigh up to 4g to a new location. Simply activate the claw on the home screen of your FreeFlight Mini app, carry something up into the air, and put it down wherever you want.

Safety First

Thanks to an advanced flight controller and high performance sensors, the Parrot Mambo is easy to pilot and control. In addition, the autopilot functionality ensures that it will stay stable and hover, even if you let go of the controls. Lastly, the Parrot Mambo comes equipped with and automatic ‘shutdown system’ that cuts the motors off in case of a crash or collision.

Remote Controller

The controller looks and feels like a simplified Xbox controller, with two multi-direction sticks that control rotation, elevation and motion. There are a couple of buttons that activate special acrobatic moves (which you may want to avoid performing with the headset on, unless you have a barf bag to hand) and a button for take-off and landing.

Camera

The 0.3-megapixel camera really is not great. Think an old VGA webcam level of quality and you’ll hit the mark. It’s noisy and blurry and the colours are underwhelming. Still, it can still be relatively fun to get a top-down view of your living room. 

Battery life and charging

Best case scenario -no hull, no accessories -and you can expect up to 9 minutes of continuous flight. Throw in the extra weight of the hull and accessories and I found this closer to 6-7 minutes. Not amazing, but enough to have a quick round of fun. Thankfully, charging only takes 30 minutes when connected to a 2A USB adapter, which could’ve been worse.

You can pick up a spare FPV battery for less money. I would have said it’s worth stretching to the battery plus battery charger pack so you can be charging a second battery while the drone is in flight-otherwise the battery needs to be attached to the drone to charge. However, Parrot says this charger dock takes 1.5 hours to charge a single battery, which negates its usefulness.
